Young African Leaders: Grassroots Democracy - Regional Project

This IVLP delegation is comprised of six individuals from six different countries across Africa, all with unique backgrounds and experiences to share.

The group includes the director of an NGO whose work promotes civic engagement among youth, a research assistant involved with mobilizing the electorate in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the President of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, a spokesperson for the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sports, an election strategist, a deputy principal of a school in South Sudan,  and a member of the Swaziland Parliament.

The delegates will visit the U.S. with the following objectives:

  • Provide an understanding of the democratic form of government in the U.S. and the significance of citizen participation in the democratic process;
  • Examine how citizen action groups at the federal, state, and local levels, interact with U.S. elected officials in an effort to influence political, social and economic change; and
  • Explore the diversity of views held by Americans, and how this diversity contributes to a dynamic and resilient political system.
