His global and international acclaim made him a great candidate for the 1970 International Visitor Leadership Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. 

How Did Sudhir Dar Make His Mark in Kansas City?

THE VIBRANT CULTURAL EXCHANGE THAT SHAPED DAR’S ARTISTIC LEGACY

During his time in the U.S., he came to Kansas City to meet with Hallmark Cards. He was hosted by Global Ties KC, then known as the KC International Visitors Council. Dar learned about the selection process for holiday greeting card drawings from the illustration department at Hallmark Cards, due to the similarity of his work back in India. This journey to the United States led to even greater success for the brilliant cartoonist.

“Mr. Dar is a delightful gentleman and it has been a treat spending time with him,” shared the program liaison. During Dar’s visit to the U.S., he had the pleasure of meeting news comedy icons Art Buchwald and Herb Block. “Mr. Dar’s drawings portray a deep understanding and mature interpretation of political issues—both national and international. He has gained eminence in the political, government, and diplomatic circles of the capital.”

While Dar returned home to New Delhi and continued his work in journalism there, visiting Kansas City sparked an ongoing relationship. The ideas and creativity Dar drew from Kansas City’s Hallmark motivated him to continue working with international publications, being published in major serials such as The New York Times, Saturday Review, and The Washington Post along with several other national and international works.
